How to Get Over Tough Matches

Updated: Feb 1, 2022

Do you have a match that eats at you? The one that you let slip away? Maybe that causes a deep pain that wont go away?

Tennis matches are often very emotional.

When we win, we soak up all the feelings of victory. Ecstasy and euphoria ensue. There’s no better feeling. But the elation fades away before bedtime.

But when the we lose, we experience the agony of defeat. We feel a stinging pain. Then we try to shut out that pain, but that doesn't help. The pain lingers.

When you resist facing the emotions, they will linger causing indefinite pain and discomfort.

Here’s a solution that has helped me and my players over the years.

Mourn losses just as intensely as you celebrate victories. Welcome the flood of emotions as strongly and as deeply as the elation. When you deal with the emotions, they tend to slip away.

This can be uncomfortable. but they must be felt as strongly as if you had won. Only then can you move on.

Hopefully you can turn that painful loss into the motivation that will drive you to new heights in the future.
